Big news! Adelphi Academy of Brooklyn Upper Schooler Bella Merolesi , who graced the front cover of the April 14 Brooklyn Spectator newspaper for donating more than 70 goodie bags to the St. Vincent De Paul Society in Bay Ridge, has continued to receive praise following her good deed. Head of School Iphigenia Romanos surprised Merolesi with copies of the paper to take home to her proud family, and posed with her in front of giant “Panthers in the Press” posters celebrating her newsworthy act that are currently on display in the 160-year-old academy’s Main Hall. “Service is such an important component of an Adelphi education, and we are so proud of Bella for selflessly giving back to the community,” Romanos said. “Her kindness helped to brighten the spirits of so many neighbors who rely on the great services provided by the St. Vincent De Paul Society on a regular basis.” The Bay Ridge chapter of the St. Vincent De Paul Society meets Tuesdays “on the avenue,” stati

Coming full circle: NBG founders tie the knot in garden’s redwood grove

Image
From brooklyneagle.com Two decades after planting a ring of redwood trees at the heart of Bay Ridge’ s Narrows Botanical Gardens, two of the oasis’ s founders were wed within that enchanted circle. James Johnson and Richard Haugland were married in the garden, at Shore Road and Mackay Place, on Saturday, April 22, Earth Day, surrounded by members of their families and close friends as well as by the plants they have nurtured so lovingly over the past 27 years in this small but precious portion of Shore Road Park. “It’ s like a druid’ s circle, a magical grove,” Johnson said. “ We got to get married in the redwood grove we planted. What gets better than that?” The trees, which filtered the morning light, were hung with crystals which sparkled as the pair exchanged their vows. The officiant was another Bay Ridge resident, Janine Graziano, a close friend to both grooms, who gave each other rings embellished with glistening opals and meteorites, combining “ the earth and the moon,”

Not in our hood: Dyker Heights residents speak out against proposed 86th Street development

Image
Two days after a public hearing at which a proposed development for 86 th Street in Dyker Heights was overwhelmingly panned, the developer has withdrawn the proposal, according to Councilmember Justin Brannan, who posted the news on Facebook. Brannan wrote, “I have spoken with the applicants …, and they have agreed to withdraw the rezoning application. The applicants expressed an understanding of the concerns of the surrounding community, and look forward to working with their neighbors in determining a better path forward to address those concerns.” Citing a negative impact on their day-to-day lives, hundreds of local residents had turned out on Monday, April 24 at a Community Board 11 public hearing about the project, and as if with one voice, spoke out against it. As presented at the hearing, the project was intended to incorporate 32 apartments, including an anticipated 10 units of affordable housing, with ground floor retail, in a six-story, 65-foot tall structu

Going the distance: Bike tour just latest challenge for three-time transplant recipient

Jerry Cahill has had an uphill ride. The Bay Ridge resident was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at age 11, at a time when the life expectancy of those with the genetic disorder was 15. “They basically told my parents just to let Jerry stay home, be comfortable,” Cahill told this paper. “It was like a death sentence. But with modern technology, all the advances in the pharmaceutical companies, the life expectancies got better.” Now 66 and the beneficiary of three organ transplants, Cahill is trying to make the road easier for others like him, which is why he’s preparing for the ride of his life: the TD Five Boro Bike Tour on May 7. He’ll be in good company, too. His pulmonologist, Dr. Selim Arcasoy, will ride by his side.  Jerry Cahill in the hospital.
