Marchers go on annual Columbus voyage

Brooklynites celebrated Italian heritage Saturday at the annual Columbus Day Parade on 18th Avenue.

The march, sponsored by the Federation of Italian-American Organizations, included elected officials, school bands, the NYPD, Boy Scouts of America and many others.

The march began on 61st Street and ended at Il Centro on Benson Avenue. Msgr. David Cassato celebrated a pre-parade Mass at St. Athanasius Church, 6115 Bay Pkwy.

Grand marshals included First Deputy Mayor Lorraine Grillo, P.S. 112 Principal Jennifer Potter, retired U.S. Army Col. Patrick Mahaney and Empire State Bank CEO Philip Guarnieri.

Jack Spatola, FIAO president and parade executive chair, said the event was a celebration of diverse cultures.

“In a diverse society, our Italian cultural heritage is treasured as a keeper of pride and integrity,” Spatola told this paper. “The parade is an expression of the thousands of families, groups, institutions, bands and floats that participate. It also inspires the thousands of spectators who enthusiastically cheer the colorful display of pride in the wonderful diversity of Brooklyn.”

“Once again the great community spirit of Bensonhurst, from its schools to its community organizations, Italian folk dances, great renditions of Italian music and Chinese dragon dances made this celebration of Columbus Day and Italian-American culture a true success,” said FIAO Chairman Carlo Scissura.

Paula Fox wrote Desperate Characters over 50 years ago, but the book remains as impactful now as it was then. Part of Brooklyn’s literary canon, it’s about a fraying marriage set against the backdrop of gentrification, a topic that is still front of mind for most of us living in the city as rental prices soar. The story centers on an estranged couple, Otto and Sophie Bentwood, who live in a brownstone in an unnamed neighborhood that reads as our current Boerum Hill/Cobble Hill. Scandinavian museum’s Bob Carlson dies at 83

Bob Carlson, a member of the Scandinavian East Coast Museum, died Jan. 2 at age 83. Carlson was a familiar face at annual Bay Ridge events such as Viking Fest, Fastelavn and Embrace Winter, where he dressed in costume and organized children’s games. Museum President Victoria Hofmo said she was lucky to call Carlson her friend. Bob Carlson entertains kids at Embrace Winter. “I prefer to remember him in all his hysterical, irreverent glory,” she said on Facebook. “Skal to you our dear friend. May your journey to Valhalla be a true Celebrity Cruise. May heaven be a costume party filled with jokes, games, prizes, fun and love.” A wake will be held Jan. 5 from 3 to 8 p.m. at McLaughlin & Sons Funeral Home.
